Fentanyl and Cocaine…A Deadly Cocktail.

Thousands of Ohio residents have died in recent years because of the introduction of fentanyl into the already prevalent supply of cocaine.  In 2017, cocaine-fentanyl mixtures killed more people than heroin-fentanyl combinations.  This deadly cocaine-fentanyl pattern continued in 2018 and shows no sign of ameliorating.

Fentanyl (an opiate) is not a natural, mass scale adulterant for cocaine which is a stimulant.  Fentanyl adulteration of the cocaine supply is occurring here, at the bottom of the supply chain, at the level of local dealers, street dealers and even users.  Make no mistake about it…The Buckeye State has a fentanyl problem.

Merriam-Webster defines homicide as, “a killing of one human being by another.”  How does it affect the individual?  “A person commits criminal homicide if they intentionally, knowingly, or with criminal negligence causes the death of an individual.”  There are actually four different types of homicide in Ohio.

1.  Murder…intentionally and knowingly taking someone’s life.

2.  Capital Murder…the killing of a police officer or fire fighter.

3.  Manslaughter…recklessly causing the death of another individual.

4.  Criminally Negligent Homicide…some accidental killings fall into this category.

The Horror of Fentanyl.

That is what illegal and indiscriminate use of this powerful drug have become in the State of Ohio.  Deaths from fentanyl, an opiate that is 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin, have skyrocketed in Ohio in recent years.  The Ohio Department of Health is gravely concerned because its use is growing rapidly across the state.

I want you to know that in Ohio, the penalties for drug offenses depend on how much of a drug and what type of a drug is involved.  That particular measurement is called a "bulk amount" and it's differs with each drug.  Currently state law would punish someone with a fourth-degree felony if they were found with just under 1 kilogram of marijuana, just under 10 grams of cocaine or crack or just under 5 grams of heroin.
